Shopping in Washington, D.C.

Shopping in Washington, D.C.

Escaping some shopping on a trip to the USA is a task for few. And in Washington DC, the feat becomes even more difficult. The city offers excellent opportunities for those looking to return with their suitcase a little more stuffed. Among outlets, shopping malls and street shops full of charm, it will be difficult to resist filling some, or many, bags. If you have plans to go to the American capital, calculate some time (and how much you can spend) for shopping.  Visit countryaah.com for map of Washington, D.C..

The unsuspecting tourist who arrives in Washington may find that there are no good shopping options there. Close to the National Mall area, where most attractions are located, you won’t even see a small shop. The false impression, however, is short-lived. Just enter one of the museums and the money starts to jump out of your wallet, imagine when you discover the number of shopping malls and outlets near the capital. Get ready to resist bravely! Check abbreviationfinder.org for abbreviations and acronyms related to Washington, D.C..

Shopping in Washington, D.C.

Outlets

As we are dealing with the USA, there is nothing like the outlets to start the marathon in and out of stores. And when we refer to Washington, DC, we speak in the plural! The city really does offer several options in the surroundings! Collect the discount coupons, separate a very large bag – or maybe a suitcase – and go shopping!

The best options for those looking to combine good quality of clothes, very low prices and easy transportation are: Tanger Outlets (85 stores) and Potomac Mills (200 stores). Those who want to extend the marathon can also venture to Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets (110 stores) and Arundel Mills Mall (200 stores). If those are not enough, there are two other options. A little further away and with fewer stores you will find Queenstown Premium Outlets (65 stores) and Hagerstown Premium Outlets (100 stores). There is a credit card for so many outlets!

Malls

If you don’t care about bargains on stock tips, don’t worry. Washington offers some attractive malls and shopping areas. Located in Virginia (a little away from downtown, but accessible via the subway), the Tysons Corner Center offers more than 300 stores and is the largest mall in Washington DC. The mix ranges from popular brands to haute couture brands.

Another good option, with more than 170 brands, is the Fashion Center at Pentagon City. Located in Arlington, close to the Pentagon, the mall is great for buying seasonal products. Whoever is there will still find the Pentagon Row nearby: a plaza-style open-air shopping center with restaurants and cafes. A little further away, in Maryland, is the Westfield Montgomery, with 200 brands. The space is undergoing reformulation and promises to become an excellent entertainment complex, with good shops and quality restaurants.

Street shops

For those who prefer to travel outdoors and mix shopping with sightseeing, Washington offers the charming M Street in Georgetown. Along the avenue florida, full of charming little houses, famous stores and trendy brands attract visitors in search of a day that goes far beyond trying on clothes. Between one shop and another you can enjoy excellent restaurants and cafes, in addition to the beautiful park that borders the Potomac River. The same climate holds for Old Town Alexandria, which also offers the perfect marriage between shopping, food and sightseeing. A delight to spend the day and get lost among so many options.

Still not tired of so many options? Those who need a last minute shopping, and do not want to go to one of the malls and more distant regions, have some points in Washington that concentrate several stores like Chinatown and Downtown, especially between G Street and F Street.

Museums

It may seem strange to recommend museums in the shopping area, but museum stores in Washington sell incredible stuff! And if you don’t stop to add the amount of the expenses, you may overflow your quota in the first one. Some offer products so different that it is impossible to resist.

How not to buy an astronaut suit or a dinosaur for the kids at the National Air and Space Museum ? Who knows a design piece in Hirshhorn ? Each museum has unique characteristics, which makes shopping even more special. It is a mix of consumption with nostalgia. You will take home more than a little gift, as it will come with all the memories of the trip together.

Gastronomy

For more gastronomic purchases, be sure to visit the Eastern Market. Especially on Saturdays and Sundays, when the flea market also happens, the place is a breather amid so much consumption. You will leave WDC a little lighter, even if you try the wonderful delicacies that are sold there.

If you find that a souvenir is still missing, in the streets around the market, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, modern stores offer excellent options!

Ready to board? Remember that taxes in the USA are charged separately from the value of the goods, so always calculate the tax before paying, so you can be sure of how much the product will cost.

The taxes in the region are:

District of Columbia (Washington DC) – 5.75%

Virginia – 6%

Maryland – 6%

Arundel Mills

For those looking to combine shopping and fun, Arundel Mills is the ideal place! The mall, located in Hanover – Maryland, specializes in outlets. There are more than 200 brand options that include names such as: Nike Factory Store, H&M, Best Buy, Aldo, Disney Store Outlet, Forever XXI, Gap, Michael Kors Outlet, Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein, Last Call by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF, J. Crew, Tommy Hilfiger, Banana Republic, GUESS Factory Store, Ann Taylor Factory Store, LEGO, DKNY, Levi’s, The Children’s Place and more!

The mall is all closed and air conditioned, which helps on very hot or cold days. The corridors are wide and extremely colorful. It looks like a big carnival, with decorations ranging from a large bottle of coca-cola in place of the front door to scenarios that resemble sailboats.

Aruldel, in addition to being a shopping center, is also an entertainment complex. In the place you can try several good restaurants, such as: Cheesecake Factory, Red Lobster, Longhorn Steakhouse, Bufalo Wild Wings and even the famous mix of theater and dinner at Medieval Times. The space also offers more than twenty movie theaters and, believe me, a casino! How about recovering at the Maryland Live poker table what you spent on shopping?

Discount coupons

Before traveling, don’t forget to print the discount coupons offered by the mall. They will certainly help to save on the final bill. You can also join Arundel Mills to receive exclusive offers by email. When you get to the mall, go to the tourist service desk, there they will provide some more discounts. It’s really crazy!

Tip

If you plan to buy a lot, consider buying a suitcase to carry the bags, or take one with you! This way it will be easier to continue shopping, without the weight of new acquisitions.

How to get

The easiest way to reach Arundel Mills is by car and the journey takes an average of 40 minutes. It is located 40km from downtown Washington, at the intersection of Baltimore / Washington and Route 100.

There is no public transport that goes directly there. Who does not have a car will have to take at least two transports. The most practical way, for those who are not driving, is to take the train from Union Station to the BWI Marshall Rail Station (35 minutes) and from there take a bus to the door of the mall (25 minutes). Three lines run the route: 17, 201 and 501 / silver.

Eastern Market

Since 1879, in the historic Capitol Hill district, this market has gone far beyond a local point of sale. Between fresh fruits, homemade recipes of traditional pies, meats from local producers, cheeses from all over the world and typical foods, the Eastern Market receives tourists and residents in search of flavors and culture.

The place is a meeting point for the neighborhood, especially on weekends, when the surroundings of the building gain dozens of stalls that sell, in addition to fresh products, handicrafts and antiques. The area also hosts concerts, dance classes and cultural events. Great tour to learn more about the life of the locals. Enjoy the trip and sit at the café located inside the building. The dishes, especially in the morning, are wonderful!

Fashion Center at Pentagon City

The proximity to downtown Washington makes Fashion Center one of the best options for those who want to shop in the city. A few minutes from the National Mall, in the city of Arlington and adjacent to the Pentagon, the mall can be accessed by subway, which greatly facilitates the tourist’s life, especially in a city where a car is not necessary.

The shopping center consists of 170 stores, including major brands such as: Apple Store, Nordstrom, Gap, Ann Taylor, Abercrombie & Fitch, Accessorize, Babygap, Bath & Body Works, Boss Hugo Boss, Forever XXI, Gymboree, Hollister Co. , L’occitane, Mac, Michael Kors, Oakley, Sephora, The Children’s Place, and as the main anchor, the wonderful Macy’s. In the same place you can solve several purchases.

The three-story mall is large and fully air-conditioned. In the center there is a large food court with more targeted options for fast foods.

Discount coupons

Even though it is not an outlet, the Fashion Center offers several online discount coupons. You can also join the Simon group, of which the mall is a part, to receive exclusive discounts on e-mail, after all, it is always good to save a little more on purchases.

How to get

The Fashion Center is located next to the Pentagon City subway station, served by the blue and yellow lines. When you get off the car you will be practically inside the mall, which offers an entrance inside the subway.

Georgetown

A perfect blend of modern and historic, Georgetown spreads charm on cobbled streets, brick houses and flowered poles. The neighborhood, founded in 1751, predates the city of Washington. To this day, the place still has something of the past that attracts tourists delighted with the beauty, restaurants and great shopping opportunities in the neighborhood.

On the edge of the Potomac River, you can enjoy the waterfront park. The space offers restaurants, rest points, jogging tracks and even a marina, the Keybridge Boathouse. Especially in summer, it is irresistible to rent a kayak or SUP board to enjoy the view of the bridge and the river. Georgetown is also covered by the C&O Channel. The century-old canal, built to transport goods between Washington and Maryland, today serves as a park and is a delightful walk for visitors and residents.

After touring the parks, be sure to head to M Street and Wisconsin Avenue. The two main streets in the neighborhood are full of good shops. Among famous brands such as Apple Store, Anthropologie, Gap, Michael Kors, H&M and many others, you will also find local shops offering exclusive products. It is a paradise for shopping lovers. Be sure to also walk through the adjacent streets, there you will find true treasures that only exist there.

As the tour is for the whole day, there is nothing like good restaurants, delicious coffees and sweets to give energy. And Georgetown is a specialist in this regard. There are so many options that you will be lost. For a quick snack, try the city’s most famous candy at Georgetown Cupcakes. Don’t be alarmed by the queue at the door. She walks fast and is worth the wait! Nearby, another paradise awaits gourmets: Dean & Deluca. And when shopping on Wisconsin Avenue, be sure to savor a Paul’s eclair.

Among the restaurants there are several specialties. The list is extensive and features flavors from the Caribbean, Ethiopia, Austria, France, India, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam and, to finish off, spectacular Mediterranean cuisine. See the full list of restaurants and get ready for a gastronomic trip around the world without even leaving the neighborhood.

If the tour goes on until dusk, in addition to the restaurant options, Georgetown offers some special places to enjoy. The area’s classic is the Blues Alley, where artists present the best of blackmusic. Looking for more options? See some neighborhood bars, pubs and nightclubs.

Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets

Member of the famous Premium Outlets chain, Leesburg offers 110 brands among clothing, shoes, cosmetics, bags and household items. Although the number of stores does not impress at first sight, the outlet offers many of the most sought after brands among Brazilians: Adidas, American Eagle, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein, Carter’s, Coach, Diesel, J. Andrew, Lacoste, Le Creuset, Michael Kors, Nike, Polo Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade New York, Tommy Hilfiger and high fashion brands like Armani, Burberry and Hugo Boss.

The mall is not closed. All corridors are open air, with only a roof near the entrance to the stores. Full of gardens, the tour becomes very pleasant on days with mild weather. However, as it is not an air-conditioned environment, it can become a little unpleasant on days of extreme temperatures.

Discount coupons

Anyone who goes to Leesburg is certainly waiting for good deals. To get even better, you can get some discount coupons before you even travel. Register on the Premium Outlets network website to receive discounts by email. The registration also gives you access to the VIP Coupon Book, a booklet full of extra discounts that can be printed on the website or taken from the customer service. To check the discounts already provided for the period of your trip, see the promotions section.

The outlet stores also accept coupons that can be found on the internet on specialized websites. Search for “brand + discount coupons” to find even more offers.

How to get

Leesburg is located 70km from Union Station, in Leesburg-Virginia. The easiest way to get there is by car and the journey takes around 50 minutes. See details of the route to the mall. Unfortunately, there is no public transport to the region. As it is only 15 minutes from Dulles Airport, a good option (if tired allows) is to go straight from the airport to the outlet.

Old Town Alexandria

Visiting historic Old Town Alexandria is one of the most beautiful tours for anyone in the US capital. George Washington’s hometown is full of charms. The buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries make up a beautiful setting with red brick walls. Life there seems to run more slowly, without haste or jitters. It’s time to take a relaxing stroll and enjoy the good life of the city’s residents.

The difference between Washington and Old Town Alexandria can already be seen in the arrival of the subway (King Street Station). When you leave the station, you will be able to board a beautiful trolley that runs free of charge throughout the city. It’s a delight to go down King Street sitting on the wooden stools while watching life go by. Choose the section you like best and go down to walk around the region. If you prefer, head to the visitor center, where maps are available with the area’s historic sites.

A bustling commercial port since the colonial period, Old Town Alexandria has experienced intensely important moments in US history, such as the Civil War. Today the region on the edge of the Potomac River is a pleasant park, with areas for restaurants, shops and sidewalks. The options are repeated throughout King Street and surprise with the variety. In addition to the charming facades, the restaurants offer elaborate and delicious menus. Stores are not restricted to famous brands. There you will find offers very different from conventional shopping malls. Opportunity to enhance the wardrobe or home with exclusive pieces.

Take advantage of the offer of boats in the area to take a stroll down the river. You can reach the city either by metro or in one of the water taxis that make the journey from the National Mall. If you still have time at the end of the tour, be sure to head to National Harbor. The entertainment complex is especially lively at night and the view from the top of the ferris wheel is the most beautiful.

Potomac Mills

One of the most popular destinations for those looking for bargains in Washington is the Potomac Mills. Located 40km from Union Station, this mall combines large anchor stores with many popular brands among Brazilians. Best of all, most work on the outlets system. There are more than 200 stores capable of making even the least consumerist tourist completely crazy with promotions.

The mall is not luxurious, but it is closed and air conditioned, with wide corridors filled with good prices. You will find there major brands such as: Abercrombie & Fitch Outlet, Aldo, Calvin Klein, Dkny, Fossil, Gap, Hollister, Michael Kors, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger Company Store, Victoria’s Secret, Forever XXI. Among the anchor stores, the highlights are: Bloomingdale’s, H&M, Nordstrom and Sears.

For mothers looking for trousseau, the mall has a wonderful surprise: a giant Children’s Place store that looks more like a supermarket, with so many aisles. In addition to it you will find Buy Buy Baby, Carter’s, Disney Store, Oshkosh B’gosh and others.

Discount coupons

Before embarking, be sure to print all available discount coupons on the Potomac Mills website. You can also receive exclusive offers and promotion alerts by registering on the shopping site. The bargains don’t stop there! When you arrive at Potomac Mills, look for customer service, present your identity as a foreigner, and receive an exclusive discount book. From there, just choose the one that will save you the most and use it when paying for your purchase.

Those who are really willing to save can still search the internet for some extra coupons on specialized websites. To find it, just type in the “brand name + discount coupons”. Don’t forget to take everything printed or have the digital file on your phone.

How to get

Potomac Mills is located in the city of Woodbridge, Virginia. You can get there by car or public transport.

For those who prefer to take public transport, the best route is to take the blue metro line to Franconia-Springfield station and, from there, the circular bus – Omni Ride / Metro Direct / Prince William Line – to the mall. The bus stop is located just off the subway, on the left. You can use the Smart Trip card (the same as for travel in WDC) or pay the USD 3.60 fare directly to the driver. It’s pretty easy! The journey does not take even half an hour to the mall and the bus runs until 11pm (except on Sundays). See the complete table with schedules.

On the way back, the same bus will be available to return to the metro station.

Tanger Outlets

The newest outlet in the Washington, DC area, opened in late 2013, is one of the best shopping spots in the city. Although the number of brands is not so high – there are 85 in total – the quality is the best. You’ll find brands like Tommy Hilfiger, H&M, Calvin Klein, IZOD, Gap, Nike, Adidas, Asics, Kipling, American Eagle Outfitters, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers Factory Store, Aeropostale, J. Crew Factory Store, Le Creuset, Kitchen Collection and Samsonite.

For those looking for layette purchases, Tanger offers the excellent The Children’s Placee and other clothing stores such as Carter’s Babies and Kids, Gymboree Outlet and OshKosh B’gosh.

Tanger Outlets has a very pleasant atmosphere, full of sofas and armchairs. Great for those who are accompanying those shoppers who spend hours in the store. The corridors, however, are open (despite being covered). On days of extreme temperatures, such as high summer and winter, the ideal is to go prepared to face the weather as if you were walking on the street.

A great advantage of the Tanger is that it is located just a few minutes drive from the National Harbor. You can take the opportunity to stroll along the Potomac River, dine in one of the restaurants or even take a ride on the Capital Wheel. The place is great to rest after a day of shopping. He is so close that it is worth even sneaking out for lunch.

Discount coupons

Before going to the outlet, check the official website to see all available offers. There is also a Digital Coupon Book available, with many discounts. It can also be picked up on the day of shopping, just go to customer service. You can also sign up for the Tanger Club loyalty program to receive exclusive promotions and discount coupons by email for member customers.

In addition, you can also use some coupons available online. Search the internet for “brand name + discount coupons”. Certainly many discount options will be available. Don’t forget to check if they are valid for physical purchases and outlets.

How to get

The quickest way to reach the outlet is by car. Unfortunately, there is no metro line that reaches the outlet. The easiest way to get to Tanger is to go to National Harbor and take a taxi (USD 10) or the free transfer from Gaylord Hotel and Waterfront Street, in front of the Aloft Hotel. It is available from Monday to Saturday.

There are a few options to get to National Harbor.

– By subway and water taxi through Old Town Alexandria

Take the blue or yellow metro line to King Street – Old Town. Upon descending, you will see a free trolley that runs throughout the city (the ride is beautiful). Go to the pier at the end of the street and take a water taxi to the National Harbor (USD 8). It seems complicated, but the route is very smooth and takes about half an hour from Old Town. Stay tuned for the ferry’s opening hours, which vary according to the season. See the scale.

– Water taxi from the National Mall

You can take a Water Taxi from the National Mall to National Harbor. He stops at Old Town Alexandria and then proceeds to his final destination. See the timetable.

– Metro and bus

Go to Branch Ave station on the green line subway. When getting off, take the NH1, NH3 or P18 bus (buses run every half hour) to the very close to the Tanger Outlets. The journey takes 1h.

– Subway and Shuttle

Go to Branch Ave station on the green line subway. A shuttle, costing USD 10, is available at the station and goes to the National Harbor.

Tysons Corner Center

Largest mall in the Washington, DC area, the Tysons Corner Center is a shopper’s paradise. There are more than 300 stores, in a space of 185 thousand m², capable of bursting a lot of credit cards. To make this shopping center even more attractive, it has a metro station that, from so close, was named after the mall.

The list of stores that fill the three floors of the Tysons is really incredible. Despite not being an outlet, it wins for the huge variety. There you will find most of the big brands. Among the anchor stores there are great highlights: Macy’s, H&M, Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor solve a good part of the purchases. Among the most famous brands are: Abercrombie & Fitch, Adidas, Aeropostale, Apple Store, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, Forever 21, Fossil, Gucci, GUESS, Hollister Co., L’Occitane en Provence, Louis Vuitton, MAC, Michael Kors, Sephora, The North Face, Urban Outfitters, Victoria’s Secret and Zara. Ufa! The set of stores appeals to all tastes and pockets.

In addition to good shopping options, Tysons offers an excellent food court and some entertainment options such as IMAX movie theaters, a National Geographic playroom and even outdoor performances. It’s a ride for the whole family!

Discount coupons

Even though it is not an outlet mall, Tysons offers some discount options. Before traveling, visit the shopping site and check out the promotions of the season. When arriving at the mall, be sure to go to the customer service desk. There you will receive a book with even more discounts. They even apply to restaurants.

How to get

The best way to get to the Tysons is by metro. Just take the silver line and get off at Tysons Corner station.
