Best travel time for Suriname

According to thesciencetutor, Suriname’s dry seasons, from early February to late April and from mid-August to early December, are the best times to visit. From March to July several species of sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs in the Wia Wia and Galibi reserves. Most tourists visit Suriname from July to August, during which time prices rise slightly.

The humid seasons in Suriname are never very wet and the dry seasons are never really dry; you should therefore always have an umbrella and light clothing with you.

Suriname – traveling in the country

Airplane: Small planes from Suriname Airways and the charter airline Gum Air fly between Paramaribo and remote regions in Suriname, including to some nature reserves and to Nieuw Nickerie. The interior of Suriname is poorly served by roads. Airplanes and river boats are often the only way to travel to this region.

Ship: On some rivers you can reach the interior of Suriname, which is otherwise hardly accessible. There are only a few ships of the line, the tariffs here are negotiable. It is best to arrange a connection in Paramaribo. Ferries cross some large rivers (including the Surinam and Coppename) and are very cheap.

Car: There aren’t many roads in Suriname and they can be difficult to drive on in the rainy season. The roads / slopes are often narrow and winding. In normal cars you can drive the roads along the coast and to Brownsberg, an off-road vehicle is required for the slopes inland.
Rental cars are available in Suriname (including at the airport in Paramaribo, hotels can also arrange rental cars), but they are expensive. You are not allowed to cross the national borders with a rental car.
Before traveling inland, it is important to find out about the weather conditions, as rain can cause long delays. Anyone traveling in their own vehicle should have enough tools and spare parts with them – and also know how to use them.
There is left-hand traffic in Suriname. An international driving license is required.

Bus:Numerous cheap, medium-sized buses (called “Jumbos” in Suriname) run on the coastal road. The price should be agreed with the bus driver before leaving. State buses are cheaper than private buses, but they are often overcrowded. There are very few buses off the main routes.

Taxi: Shared taxis drive on the routes along the coast. They are much more expensive than buses, but much faster. Taxis do not have a meter, fares are negotiable but usually not very high. The price should be agreed before departure.
