Products of the Season: Know the Advantages

Know and consume the products of the season represents numerous advantages for both the health, as for the wallet and for the environment. It is one of the main assumptions of sustainable food, because when it consumes the products in its height to the “natural” diminishes the impact of its production on the environment. Learn more in this article.

Products of the Season Know the Advantages

Currently, thanks to the advance of agricultural technologies and to meet the demands of the world’s population, we have access to almost all types of products, in particular fruits and vegetables during the entire year, even if they are outside of their normal season of production.

However, this increasing development and intensification of agriculture cause a negative environmental impact, in addition to promoting the loss nutritional of foods. As such, you should give preference to the products of the season / seasonal, so take advantage of the best quality / price ratio.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SEASONAL PRODUCTS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

The consumption of seasonal products is part of the concept of sustainable food, which comes from concern with the negative consequences of the modern food system on the environment and on health.

Indeed, several studies have been done in order to assess the environmental impact of food production and, consequently, to outline the best strategies for a sustainable food.

In these studies, it was found that in addition to livestock, the agriculture sector is one that contributes more significantly to the global emissions of greenhouse gases.

In this context, the sustainable food presents itself as a possible solution to achieve a better balance between food production, health, and environmental protection.

The products of the season such as do not require much transportation or methods of conservation (use less strings of cold, less preservatives, among other factors), contribute to the decrease of the emission of gases with greenhouse effect.

PRODUCTS OF SEASON AND NUTRITIONAL VALUE

In addition to the environmental aspects, the products of the season are, generally, nutritional characteristics and organoléticas (taste, odor, color), the higher, precisely due to the lower processing and transport that are suffering.

This is because, as the fruits and vegetables begin to lose nutrients soon after harvest, when they are consumed out of their time natural, spend a lot of time in transport, cold-storage and shelves, getting to travel very far to get to our supermarkets.

In addition, as these products are harvested still green, ripen in the path instead of maturarem to the Sun. In this way, diminish its richness in nutrients and vitamins.

If they are gases, there is still the possibility of the addition of toxic substances, particularly pesticides and fungicides, which interfere with the nutritional value of the food.

PRODUCTS OF THE TIME AND ECONOMIC VALUE

Finally, another advantage of the products of the season is the fact that they are available at a more affordable price, once again due to the lower cost of production.
