19th Century Women’s Fashion

The middle class is a class that is between the Peasants and Nobles classes. The bourgeois exercise often trades as traders or artisans. The bourgeoisie dominates the nineteenth century, women still account for more.

The Bourgeoises loved to display their wealth in sign outside (nice houses, nice clothes). But they were essentially considered as housewives, what today would be called a “housewife”. They took their role very seriously: laundry care, interior, decorations, shopping, all these tasks were reserved for them and they made sure that all are completed in due time. The Bourgeoises not working, their days were devoted to household chores and activities, both internal and external. They taught their girls to embroider from an early age, they they were reading books such as Voltaire or Rousseau (the woman reader was considered highly intelligent), learned their manners, how to become a good mistress home, or how to be a good foil for her husband, because at that time, the bourgeois woman had to represent her husband by his physical appearance and culture. A good hostess should also know how to sing and play an instrument (the piano was the most common) to be able to entertain the guests during mundane, frequent evenings in this class where people liked to show off.Women also often organized visits to other ladies of the same social rank: the sole purpose of Bourgeois’s representation.

In the nineteenth century, multiple streams are based on influences such as ancient and classical history, exoticism and the influence of popular costume.

(The history of costume began in the early nineteenth century. The male costumes and feminize the dresses women wore modernize representative, share textures and shapes, the luxury of bourgeois society for all to see ).

Most often, the character mode given some costumes refer to the ancient and modern history of the West, as well as ancient and political news. However, a new spirit of modernity animates this century. For the bourgeoisie, the elegant world of the nineteenth century was splendid and luxurious. The eighteenth-century fashion has evolved rapidly bringing, in the nineteenth century, more complex creations.

To wear, but more sophisticated because the outfits are created and brought in the only goal being to represent. In the nineteenth century, it is also the emergence of haute couture, launched by Empress Eugénie

Napoleon II’s wife, who appealed to Charles Frederick Worth

(Of English origin, he is the creator of the concept of fashion and Haute-couture houses. In the middle of the nineteenth century, Worth is causing a revolution by bringing new ideas of modernity and the lust clothing and creating his own fashion house in Paris. It is thanks to his success with the bourgeois society that will purchase this notoriety)

It is true that at that time, social differentiation is through dress. But this differentiation gradually disappears during the expansion of the garment and ready-to-wear (  as opposed to haute couture, ready-to-wear is made of parts sold as finished products and not custom made ). Thus Paris became the capital of fashion, where all become feasible confections, inspired by the luxury and ceremonies of the High Society.
